Summary: In this paper, part of the Meemann Volume, a re-examination of Machaeracanthus-specimens in older US collections, and evidence from newly discovered specimens from the Lower Devonian (Emsian)of the Gaspé Peninsula, Québec (Canada) and Bundenbach and Oberkirn (Germany), indicate that Machaeracanthus had "paired pairs" of pectoral spines and a structure of the scapulocoracoid resembling those of ischnacanthiform acanthodians. Reaction 1: Burrow et al. (2013; Vertebrate microremains from the late Silurian of Arisaig, Nova Scotia, Canada; in Journal of Paleontology 87(6): 1041-1059) refer to Burrow et al. (2010) for the occurrence of Machaeracanthus spines around the Old Red Sandstone Continent (Laurussia) and the Amorica terrain (Gondwana).
