| Summary: | The Schielenberg quarry is located between Herrstein and Breitenthal, and since the 1930s it has been placed third among the Hunsrück Slate localities (after Bundenbach and Gemünden) with respect to its fossil content. A participant on a geological excursion in 2011 found a complete fossil starfish on the dump at this quarry. In this paper, the eighth in the series "Collecting from tip heaps in the Hunsrück Slate", Wouter Südkamp describes cephalopods, starfish, brittle stars, crinoids, arthropods and associated fauna from this quarry. Notable finds include a rare starfish belonging to the genus Baliactis and the phyllocarid crustacean Nahecaris with encrusted stalks of Sphenothallus (probably a polyp). The paper ends with some touristic tips. |
