Summary: The worth seeing village Alken (Lower Mosel valley, Germany) is well-known since the seventies because of a spectacular fossil flora and fauna from the early Devonian. As well as several species of plants especially numerous arthropods, but also fish, bivalves, brachiopods and tentaculitids occur. The author summarizes the relevant literature (geology, sedimentology, paleoecology and paleontology) and presents his own finds. The sedimentary structures and the paleontologcical information indicate a marine to brackish depositional environment.
