Summary: Until about 20 years ago the general consensus was, that microstructures, as cellular tissue, could not be preserved in the Hunsrück Slate. Now it has been successful to prove the optical apparatus of trilobites and the nerves to the brain with the most up-to-date technology. With it the discoverers, the radiation physicist Walther Lehmann (†1959) and the chemical physicist and palaeontologist Wilhelm Stürmer (†1986), which had observed the filamentous structures in the eyes of Chotecops ferdinandi and interpreted these as elements of the inner eye structure, were rehabilitated posthumously. Finally, a possible explanation, why it was obviously right, that in the Hunsrück Slate cells and nerves could be preserved, has been given.
